Many factors affect color, including resin, additives, texture, shape, lighting conditions, usage environment, processing conditions, and most of all human perception.

Additionally, regulatory compliance, such as UL or FDA guidelines, can impact the selection of pigments and dyes used to achieve an accurate color match.

When preparing a custom color match POLY TECH INDIA will ask you to supply information regarding the following issues:

  • End-Use Application
    What type of application the color is intended for and how it is used aids colorists it determining what pigments are appropriate and which will result in the best match and remain consistent during environmental exposure.

  • Base Resin System & Specific Grade
    Some pigments are not compatible with all polymers and certain grades utilize processing parameters that can degrade many pigments.

  • Processing Method
    Knowing whether injection, blow, compression, or rotational molding or profile, sheet, film, or fiber extrusion will be deployed helps us determine if appropriate dispersion will occur.

  • Type of Color Target
    Knowledge of the material or parameters the color target is native to can boost our colorists’ confidence a quality match can be achieved.

  • Match Type
    Whether an exact match, match & make, or straight shot is expected can impact what pigments or dyes are utilized to help control coloring costs.

  • Opacity
    If the material needs to maintain transparency, translucency, or become opaque is an important factor in meeting criteria with many resin systems.

  • Part Thickness
    How thick a part will be at various locations and still need to maintain the desired opacity, measurements can be provided in inches or millimeters.

  • Supply Method
    How a processor wants its color delivered, whether in masterbatch, cube blend, or precolored form.

  • Regulatory Compliance
    Meeting EU Food/BGA/LPF, heavy metal-free, or cadmium-free requirements can limit the selection of compatible pigments.

  • Additional Properties
    If the color will be used in conjunction with reinforcement/fillers, UV stabilizers, anti-stats, flame retardants, antimicrobial additives, or require laser markability may impact the ability to obtain certain colors.

  • Visual Standards
    If the application has cosmetic attributes, is an internal part, or simply requires color for identification purposes allows colorants to be chosen that maintain cost controls.

  • Evaluation Light Source
    Quality color matches can appear different when viewed under different lighting conditions, common sources for evaluation color are D65 (artificial daylight), CWF (fluorescent), tungsten (incandescent), and UL2000.

  • Spectrophotometer
    Calibration of different brands and models of color measuring equipment varies, common brands are Gretag Mcbeth, Datacolor, ACS, Minolta, or XRite; typically models are either desktop or handheld units.

  • Instrumental Evaluation
    If a color is going to be measured using instrumentation a numerical tolerance must be specified as the acceptable margin of error.

  • Delta E
    If Delta E is used to determine match accuracy whether the CIE-LAB or CMC scale will be used must be known.

  • Texture
    Surface types can influence a match’s perceived successfulness, common textures that need to be identified include glossy, matte, textured, moldtek, or VDI.

  • Disposition
    If a colored part stands by itself, mates with parts made from the same or other materials—which may also be colored—or is attached to a substrate can impact the perception of the precision of color.

Types of Plastic Additives:

  • Antiblock — This reduces the friction on the surface and imparts lubricity for ease of use.

  • Anti-Fogging  – Antifogging additives minimize the surface tension so the water forms a continuous transparent film rather than droplets.

  • Antioxidant — This additive help preserve the appearance and physical properties of plastics. In packaging applications, it helps prevent oxidative degradation of the polymer, which helps to create a more chemically resistant plastic.

  • Anti-Static — This additive helps prevent static charges that can build up on the surface of plastics products that attract dust and dirt particles, cause clinging and sticking, as well as even be a fire or explosion hazard. Adding it to your product(s) creates antistatic plastic to fit all your needs.

  • Clarifying Agents for PP — PP does not have clarity or transparency of amorphous polymers, so the crystal structure of the resin needs to be changed if a very clear and transparent product is desired.

  • Fillers — Fillers are used to improve a product’s stiffness, hardness, and shrinkage stability.

  • Impact Modifiers – Impact modifiers increase a product’s flexibility and prevent the plastic from splitting into many pieces.

  • Laser Marking/Welding – Permanent markings can be achieved on plastic parts.

  • Matting Agents — This additive modifies the molded part surface to create a matte or frosted look in a part. With the addition of matting agents, the surface gloss can be reduced, resulting in a more light-diffusing plastic.

  • Mold Release — These additives migrate to the surface of the part and increase the lubricity, which helps facilitate ease of release of the parts from the mold.

  • Nucleating Agent  — Added as a processing aid to decrease a product’s cycle time, nucleating agents can also help to enhance stiffness and clarity.

  • Optical Brightner — This is used in white or colored plastics to make them look brighter. It is also used as markers in plastic parts which can be detected under UV light.

  • Scent — This is used to reflect the fragrance or aroma of the product in plastic packaging. It can also be used to mask the unpleasant odor of some plastics.

  • Slip — Slip additives blooms to the surface during the process and reduce the coefficient of friction, imparting lubricity.

  • Stearates — Stearate additives help reduce the friction between the polymer and a filler, metal, or another polymer.

  • Toner — Sometimes used with an optical brighter, but usually has a bluish-purple tent to overcome the yellow appearance of the resin. It will help the product look clearer.

  • UV Stabilizers — UV light stabilizers prevent yellowing and the formation of harmful free radicals that can degrade and decompose polymer chain. It also helps delay the chalking effect.

Path-breaking research has made available biocompatible, FDA-compliant PVDF (Polyvinylidene Difluoride) coatings in fifteen colors.

PVDF is a popular choice for coating and legibly marking identification to reusable and disposable medical devices and instruments due to its rugged wearability, chemical resistance and inert characteristics.

Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. has announced the availability of fifteen colors of PVDF (Polyvinylidene Difluoride) coatings – all of which have undergone the rigors of recent biocompatibility testing and been declared suitable for use on medical devices and/or medical instruments.

Permanent marking on medical devices has become a hot topic of late due to the recent ruling from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandating that all medical devices must include a Unique Device Identifier (UDI).

Due to its durability, inertness, and resistance to solvents, acid, and heat, PVDF is a popular choice for marking reusable medical devices and instruments which must withstand the rigors of daily handling and sterilization.

Additional desirable characteristics of PVDF coatings include a lower cure temperature (500 Degrees F) and good dielectric strength (1500V/mil).
